The Matter Volume Dashboard shows the volume of matters created over a selected time period so you can identify trends and demand on the legal department.
It helps answer: “How much new legal work is coming into our department?”
You can then refine that view by matter type, who is handling the work, and where the work is originating—useful for staffing decisions and spotting potential risk areas.
You must have the Dashboard Administrator role to view dashboards for your organization.
Controls
Selecting the Controls dropdown reveals a list of filters. Changing these filters updates the graphs and results shown below.
Pivot by
The Pivot by filter controls how the results are grouped (the dimension shown on the chart grouping / legend). You can choose:
Customer Division: Groups matters created by division
Customer Office: Groups matters created by office
Law Firm: Groups matters created by law firm
Law Firm Office: Groups matters created by law firm office
Matter Contact: Groups matters by matter contact
Matter Type: Groups matters by all levels of matter type
Matter Type Level 1: Groups matters by the first level of matter type
Viewing the Graph
The chart shows the number of matters created over the selected time period.
X-axis (time): By default, the X-axis displays Matters Created Date (Month). Use the arrows in the upper-right chart controls to adjust the time granularity or range (as available in your configuration).
Y-axis / grouping: By default, matters are grouped by Customer Division. Use Pivot by to change how the matter volume is segmented.
If you want to drill into a specific bar, right-click the bar to reveal additional options (for example, drilling down to a smaller time unit such as week—if enabled).
Use Case 1: Matter Volume Analysis
In this example, you use the Matter Volume dashboard to take a closer look at a month with unusually high volume (for example, March 2020).
In Pivot by, select Matter Type. The chart updates to show which matter types contributed to the volume.
Hover over a colored segment (or use the legend) to see which category each color represents.
To see when matters occurred in that month and who they were assigned to:
- Right-click the bar for the month and select Drill down to Week (if available).
- Change Pivot by to Matter Contact.
- Hover over segments to see the matter contact and the time grouping for each created matter.
Use Case 2: Drill Down into the Matter Records
You can click a stacked segment in the chart to populate the Matters List Grid at the bottom of the page with the underlying matter records.
From the Matters List Grid, you can:
Right-click a matter title (or use the available action) to open the Matter Overview page
Export the list using the buttons in the upper-right of the grid (for example, CSV or Excel, depending on your configuration)
