Contacts allow your organization to store information about individuals and organizations. You can associate contacts with matters (as Matter Participants) or legal with holds (as Custodians), if the Legal Holds feature is enabled for your organization. Contacts can be imported or created directly within LexisNexis® CounselLink®.
Examples of contacts include:
- Opposing law firm on a case
- Plaintiffs or defendants
- Patent inventor
- Internal stakeholder
Contacts can also be added to Contact Groups, which helps streamline adding multiple contacts to matters or legal holds.
You must have the Contact Administrator or Contact Setup role to perform actions on a contact.

About the Contact Overview Page
Top Section of the Overview
The main details area displays high-level information about the Contact, including activation status, Contact Type, contact information, and several other useful details.
You can also perform the following actions:
- Edit: Click the pencil icon to edit the Contact.
- Export: Click the download icon to export contact information as an .xlsx file.
- Inactivate / Activate: Click the vertical ellipses to manage the status of the Contact.
Matters Tab
The Matters tab lists all matters to which the contact is assigned. Click a matter name to open its Matter Overview page.
Legal Holds Tab
The Legal Holds tab lists any legal holds associated with the contact. Click a legal hold name to open its overview page.
You can assign or release the contact from their holds in this tab.

| Assign | After selecting one or more holds, click this button to assign the contact to the legal hold(s). |
| Release | After selecting one or more holds, click this button to release the contact to the legal hold(s). |
Groups Tab
The Groups tab lists all Contact Groups to which the contact belongs.
You can add or remove the contact from a Contact Group in this tab.

| Add | Add the contact to an existing Contact Group. |
| Remove | After selecting one or more groups, remove the contact from the group(s). |
Documents Tab
The Documents tab lists all documents uploaded directly to the contact.
Documents uploaded to a contact are not available in the global Document Search.
Adding Documents to a Contact
- Navigate to the Contact Group Overview page.
- Click the Documents tab.
- Click +Add.
The Add Document window displays.
- Upload a file by selecting it from your computer or dragging it into the upload area.
- Enter a name in the Name field.
- Click Save.
Deleting a Document on a Contact
- Navigate to the Contact Group Overview page.
- Click the Documents tab.
- Select the checkbox next to the document(s).
- Click Delete.
- Click Yes, Delete on the confirmation window.
Notes Tab
The Notes tab allows you to add notes related to the contact and view previously added notes.
Currently, notes cannot be deleted—only added.
To add a note:
- Click the +Add button .
- Cnter your text.
- Click Save.
History Tab
The History tab displays a log of all actions performed on the contact, including updates and status changes.
