Adding Sub-Matters to a Matter
You can add a sub-matter to a matter to group related work. For example, you might group related class action lawsuits using sub-matters.
You must have the Relationship Administrator role to add or manage sub-matters.
- On the Matter Overview page, click the Related Matters tab.
If the tab contains no matters:

Click Add Existing Matter to add an existing matter to it, or Create New Sub-Matter to create a new matter to add.
- If you select Add Existing Matter, proceed to Step 3. If you select Create New Sub-Matter, The Create New Matter page displays with the parent matter populated in the Relate To Existing Matter field.

If the tab does have matters:
- Check the box next to an existing matter.

Click Add Sub-matter to add another related matter.
The Add Sub-matters search page displays.
- Search for the matter(s) you want to add.

To add one or more matters, click one of the following, click Add Selected Matter(s).
If you don't find a matter to add, you can also create a new one. Click +Add New Matter to be taken to the Create Matter. page. The page will automatically populate the parent matter for which you've selected.
Removing Sub-Matters
You can remove a sub-matter from a relationship structure. If the removed sub-matter has child matters, those child matters are also removed from the relationship structure. Removed matters continue to exist in the CounselLink database.
You must have the Relationship Administrator role to manage sub-matters.
- Click the Related Matters tab on the Matter Overview page.
- Select the check box to the left of the sub-matter(s).

Click Remove Related Matter.
A confirmation box displays.
- Click OK. The selected sub-matter(s) are removed from the parent matter, and a confirmation message displays on the Matter Overview page.
Moving Sub-Matters
You can move an existing sub-matter to a new parent matter within the same relationship structure to reorganize the hierarchy. Any child matters of the moved sub-matter are also aligned under the new parent.
You must have the Relationship Administrator role to add or manage sub-matters.
- Select the check box next to the sub-matter(s) you want to move.

Click Move Related Matter.
The Move Related Matters window displays.
- Click the matter link for the new parent. The sub-matter is moved to the selected matter.
